Drawing into Dust

Raw clay, Industrial Sandpaper, Body

Performance 2016

This is documentation of a performance in Alfred, NY in January 2016. I used a large piece of industrial sandpaper as a ground on which to grind a chunk of raw clay into powder. It is at once an act of destruction and recording, transposing layer after layer of minerals from 3D into 2D, revealing the inner contents of the clay while simultaneously altering the form.

The movements of manual labor and full body drawing are combined into a layered dance of mark-making. Thus the work is recording something of the clay, but simultaneously demonstrating my own effort, movement and engagement. Ultimately, the work is left unfinished, a fragment to signal the action that has taken place.
