Replacement II (clay floor)
Wet clay, human footprints. 2015.
Replacement II is a counter-action to Replacement. It was made by transplanting 3000lbs of wet Chesapeake Bay clay to a gallery near the tributary creek and trammeling it by foot into a gentle slope against a long wall. As the thinner, exposed edge dried, it filled the gallery air with humidity and cracks opened up in the clay, proceeding toward the back wall. These ecological processes were re-introduced to the hermetic, white space of the gallery, disrupting the notion that our built environment could exist apart from natural systems.
